The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has praised the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) for taking decisive legal action against a senior Gauteng traffic officer accused of unlawfully interfering with a colleague. This follows the release of cell phone footage showing the officer in uniform using offensive language and gestures towards a female EMPD officer.

The video, which captures derogatory remarks and threats, has prompted the RTMC to strongly condemn the officer’s behavior. RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane criticized the officer’s actions, particularly during Women’s Month, a time dedicated to celebrating women’s achievements and contributions.

“The RTMC unequivocally condemns this rogue behavior, which undermines the integrity of law enforcement agencies,” Zwane said.

The RTMC supports the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety, Sizakele Masuku, in laying charges against the officer. These charges include crimen injuria, hindering and obstructing an officer, defeating the ends of justice, and abuse of authority.

Zwane also called for corrective actions from the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, urging them to hold the officer accountable through internal consequence management processes. He emphasized the need for stringent measures against those who misuse their authority, advocating for severe penalties to maintain impartiality and respect within law enforcement.

In this important month, dedicated to honoring women, Zwane stressed the necessity for law enforcement personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect. The RTMC remains committed to fostering a culture of integrity and accountability across all law enforcement agencies.
