The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday and immediately referred to a joint parliamentary panel following an intense debate. The government maintained that the proposed law did not aim to interfere with mosque operations, while the opposition accused it of targeting Muslims and violating constitutional values.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced plans to consult leaders from all parties to form the joint parliamentary committee. Opposition members, particularly from the INDIA bloc, vocally opposed the bill’s introduction, labeling it as a “draconian law” and accusing the government of attacking the Constitution.

Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the bill, arguing that it aimed to bring needed reforms to the Waqf Act of 1995. He asserted that the existing law had failed in its purpose and required amendments to ensure justice for ordinary Muslims. Despite defenses, the bill has sparked significant controversy and will undergo further scrutiny in committee.
