Controversy Surrounds Proposed Waqf Amendments

Prominent Muslim organizations have expressed strong opposition to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill introduced in Lok Sabha, urging its withdrawal. Critics argue the amendments will undermine the autonomy of waqf properties and infringe upon religious freedoms. The Bill was referred to a joint parliamentary panel for further discussion.

On Thursday, several prominent Muslim organizations condemned the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill introduced in the Lok Sabha, pressing the government to withdraw the amendments and initiate detailed consultations with all stakeholders, including religious leaders.

Both factions of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind slammed the Bill, raising serious concerns about its implications. Maulana Arshad Madani, leading one faction, asserted the amendments aim to alter the status of waqf properties, making it easier for the government to seize possession. Madani emphasized that the amendments would shift final decision-making power from the Waqf Tribunal to the district collector, which he argues undermines religious freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.

Maulana Mahmood Madani, from the other faction, echoed these sentiments, warning that the changes would enable unnecessary governmental interference. He urged the government to reconsider the Bill, calling for an inclusive consultation process with all involved parties.
