Tear Gas Fired at Anti-Government Protesters in Nairobi
Police in Kenya used tear gas to disperse anti-government protesters in Nairobi amidst ongoing demonstrations demanding President William Ruto's resignation. Over 50 people have died in the unrest. Authorities arrested 174 people and raided opposition financier Jimi Wanjigi's home. Ruto has restructured his cabinet but faces continued criticism.
Police in Kenya deployed tear gas on Thursday to disperse anti-government demonstrators from the heart of Nairobi. The protests aim to force President William Ruto to resign, following his recent concessions.
Starting peacefully in June, the nationwide protests have escalated, resulting in over 50 deaths. Nairobi's financial district was deserted as riot police set up roadblocks and dispersed protesters chanting for Ruto's resignation.
Acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli reported 174 arrests, including 126 in Nairobi. Three journalists were injured when tear gas canisters were fired near them. Police also raided the house of opposition supporter Jimi Wanjigi.
President Ruto, facing his biggest crisis in two years, has overhauled his cabinet and promised to address the demands of the protesters, but activists remain unsatisfied. Ruto defended the conduct of the police and criticized the protests, urging national unity.
