Violence Erupts in Tripoli: Militia Clashes Turn Deadly

The clashes, which unfolded over several hours and involved heavy weaponry, occurred on Friday in Tripoli's eastern neighborhood of Tajoura between the Rahba al-Duruae militia, led by warlord Bashir Khalfallah, known as al-Baqrah, and the al-Shahida Sabriya militia. According to the Health Ministry's Ambulance and Emergency Services, at least nine people were killed and sixteen others wounded.

The violence began with an attempted assassination of al-Baqrah, which his militia attributed to al-Shahida Sabriya, local media sources revealed. Khaled al-Meshry, the newly-elected head of the High Council of State, condemned the assassination attempt and called for a thorough investigation.

The warring factions are both allied with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah's government, whose spokesperson declined to comment. This recent flare-up highlights the instability in Libya since the 2011 civil war and the downfall of long-time dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Libya has long been divided between rival administrations in the east and west, each supported by armed groups and foreign governments. While western Libya is controlled by militias aligned with Dbeibah's government, the east and south are under the control of military commander Khalifa Hifter. Friday's conflict is the latest in a series of skirmishes for control in the west.

In recent months, the coastal town of Zawiya and Tripoli have experienced similar violence. Concurrently, Hifter's forces have deployed troops to the southwestern region, raising the specter of further conflict. The United Nations and Western embassies have warned that such movements risk igniting an all-out war, jeopardizing the 2020 ceasefire agreement.
