Syed Refaat Ahmed Appointed as Bangladesh’s New Chief Justice Amid Judiciary Revamp

Syed Refaat Ahmed was sworn in as Bangladesh's new chief justice on Sunday, succeeding Obaidul Hassan, who stepped down under pressure from public protests demanding judiciary reforms.

Hassan, along with five other judges from the Appellate Division, resigned on Saturday, days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's regime and widespread protests by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

During a ceremony at the Darbar Hall of the president's official residence, President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Justice Ahmed at 12:45 pm local time as reported by The Daily Star.

The oath-taking ceremony was overseen by Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain and attended by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, who was sworn in on Thursday as the head of an interim government.

In the aftermath of the student protests, several prominent officials, including Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Maksud Kamal and Bangla Academy Director General Professor Dr Md Harun-Ur-Rashid Askari, resigned from their posts.
