The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has confirmed its active review of an extradition request concerning former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This announcement underscores the intricate balance between legal duties and regional diplomatic efforts, particularly as India aims to solidify relations with Bangladesh's new government post the 'July Revolution'.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that this request is interwoven within India's ongoing judicial assessments. Jaiswal emphasized that India's approach remains restrained and adheres strictly to legal protocols, while fostering constructive dialogues with involved stakeholders.
Despite the controversy around Hasina's stay in India since 2024, New Delhi maintains its commitment to nurturing a robust alliance with Dhaka's administration. Jaiswal reiterated India's intent to bolster bilateral ties, with both countries exploring potential partnerships in trade, energy, and security, through formal diplomatic channels.
Structured dialogues are being scheduled to harmonize India's and Bangladesh's stances on a spectrum of regional and global concerns, especially against the backdrop of the 2024 student-led revolution in Bangladesh. India's prime interest lies in Bangladeshi stability and democracy, while legal assessments of the extradition request proceed.
As official meetings loom, the MEA reiterated its refusal to let the extradition case dictate its strategic relationship with Bangladesh, focusing instead on the broader welfare of the neighboring nation.
