The Islamic State group claimed responsibility Monday for a devastating minivan explosion in Kabul, the Afghan capital, which resulted in the death of at least one person.
The militant organization stated it had planted the explosive device that detonated Sunday, targeting members of the Shiite minority and leading to approximately 13 casualties.
According to police spokesman Khalid Zadran, the explosion occurred in western Kabul's Dushti Barachi neighborhood, causing one fatality and injuring eleven others. He noted that a police investigation is currently in progress.
The Dashti Barchi area has frequently been a target for the Islamic State group's Afghanistan affiliate, with significant attacks on schools, hospitals, and mosques. The IS faction has been a staunch adversary of the Taliban since the latter regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, following the withdrawal of US and other international troops.
