Kirby indicated that the U.S. had heightened its regional force posture, echoing Israel's apprehensions about an imminent Iranian-backed attack. This follows accusations from Iran and Hamas against Israel, alleging Israeli involvement in the assassination of a Hamas leader in Tehran last month. "We share the same concerns and expectations that our Israeli counterparts have concerning the potential timing. This could unfold as soon as this week," Kirby stated.

Israel remains on edge, anticipating a major attack since a missile strike killed 12 youngsters in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights last month, prompting Israel to retaliate by killing a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut. The assassination of Hamas political leader Haniyeh in Tehran further exacerbated tensions, with Iran vowing retaliation against Israel. Additionally, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the deployment of U.S. military assets, including a guided missile submarine and the accelerated deployment of the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to the Middle East. This preparation comes as Israeli forces continue their operations near Khan Younis in southern Gaza amidst international efforts to broker a ceasefire and prevent a broader regional conflict.
