Bangladesh's deposed prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, along with six other senior officials, including two ministers from her cabinet and the sacked police chief, is set to face trial on murder charges, according to court officials who made the announcement on Tuesday.
The murder case marks the first against the 76-year-old Hasina since she resigned and fled to India on August 5. The charges stem from the death of a grocery shop owner amid last month's violent protests which ultimately brought down her government.
Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury has instructed police to register the case as an FIR, based on a complaint by a resident of Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area. The six others charged include Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, home minister Asaduzzaman Khan, and former inspector general of police Abdullah Al Mamun. The whereabouts of these former officials remain unknown.
