Judge to Force Google to Allow More App Downloads

U.S. District Judge James Donato revealed his intention to mandate Alphabet’s Google to offer more avenues for app downloads on Android devices, following a jury's decision last year stating Google's monopolistic practices. The case was spearheaded by “Fortnite” creator Epic Games.

Although Google raised concerns about the cost and complications of implementing these changes, Donato emphasized user and developer flexibility, indicating a ruling would be made in the next few weeks. He also mentioned setting up a three-person compliance and technical committee to oversee the changes.

Epic accused Google of monopolizing app access and payment systems on Android devices. While Google denies these claims, Judge Donato's upcoming injunction aims to increase competition and loosen Google's control over app distribution.
