Modi Advocates Secular Civil Code in Independence Day Speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday emphasized the urgent need for a secular civil code, criticizing the existing framework as a 'communal civil code' discriminatory in nature.

In his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Modi stressed, 'A large section of the country believes, which is true also, that the civil code is actually in a way a communal civil code. It discriminates among people.' According to him, laws that divide the nation on communal lines and foster inequality have no place in modern society.

Modi underscored that the Supreme Court has issued multiple directions advocating for a uniform civil code, citing the spirit of the Constitution and Article 44, which obligates the State to secure a Uniform Civil Code throughout India. He called for a serious discussion on the subject, mentioning recent developments in Uttarakhand and ongoing public consultations initiated by the Law Commission.
