The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was officially enforced in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, following the announcement of the poll schedule for the assembly elections in the Union Territory. The Election Commission stated that all provisions of the MCC will be applicable, covering candidates, political parties, and governments in the region.
Officials further clarified that the MCC will also apply to the union government in relation to any announcements or policy decisions that pertain to Jammu and Kashmir. Following the enforcement, the Election Commission of India directed J-K's chief electoral officer and chief secretary to take immediate measures to ensure compliance with the MCC.
The instructions included actions against the defacement of government property, misuse of official vehicles, and advertisements at the public's expense. The three-phased assembly elections in J&K are set to begin on September 18, marking the first such exercise since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019. The 90-member Haryana assembly will also go to polls on October 1, with results for both elections declared on October 4.
