Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, honored Manu Bhaker, the double Bronze Medalist of the Paris Olympics 2024, in a special ceremony in Delhi. Bhaker, the daughter of a seasoned seafarer, was recognized with a Phoolam Gamusa, a model ship, and a cheque for ₹10 lakhs from the Indian Ports Association (IPA) in acknowledgment of her historic achievement as the only Indian to win two Bronze medals in a single Olympics.
During the event, Bhaker, who is the daughter of Chief Engineer Ram Kishan Bhaker, also interacted with young seafarers, sharing how the values of discipline, dedication, and focus, which she learned growing up in a seafaring family, contributed to her success. The Minister also felicitated Bhaker's parents, acknowledging their support in nurturing her talent.
Minister Sonowal praised Bhaker's perseverance and excellence, highlighting her as an inspiration to India's youth, particularly young seafarers. He emphasized the government's ongoing commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership to promoting excellence in sports, which has greatly contributed to India's global achievements.
Manu Bhaker spoke about her fond memories of traveling with her family on ships, which enriched her understanding of different cultures and strengthened her resolve to overcome challenges. She expressed her belief in pushing beyond limits, a value she sees as intrinsic to the seafarer's community.
The event was also attended by senior officials, including TK Ramachandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Vijay Kumar, Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India. Minister Sonowal expressed confidence that Bhaker will continue to bring glory to the country with her future achievements.
