Russia Labels Clooney Foundation as 'Undesirable'

Russian prosecutors have designated The Clooney Foundation for Justice as an 'undesirable' organization, accusing it of discrediting Moscow with Hollywood-style efforts. Founded by George and Amal Clooney, the Foundation is deemed to support 'false patriots' and promote criminal prosecution against Russian leadership. The Foundation has not yet responded to the allegations.

Russian authorities announced on Monday that they have classified The Clooney Foundation for Justice, a U.S.-based nonprofit, as an 'undesirable' organization, claiming it engages in Hollywood-scale activities to tarnish Moscow's image. Established by actor George Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, the Foundation is now subject to a complete ban under Russian law.

The 'undesirable' designation, used since 2015, has been applied to numerous foreign entities. Russian officials allege the Clooney Foundation supports so-called 'false patriots' who have fled the country and accuse it of using humanitarian initiatives to criticize Russian leadership and legal frameworks concerning foreign agents and NGOs.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice has yet to comment on the designation. Russia's 'undesirable' list includes various media outlets, political, cultural, and religious groups seen as threats to national security, highlighting an ongoing crackdown on dissent.
