Former U.S. Representative George Santos pleaded guilty to criminal corruption charges, including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos, who was expelled from Congress after numerous scandals, apologized and accepted responsibility. He faces a potential 22-year prison sentence and will be sentenced in February 2024.
Former U.S. Representative George Santos pleaded guilty to criminal corruption charges on Monday, marking a significant development in the downfall of the novice politician. Santos, who was expelled from Congress last year after a brief and scandal-plagued tenure, admitted to charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, which carry a minimum two-year prison sentence. His guilty plea was entered before U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert in Central Islip, New York, on Long Island.
After pleading guilty, the 36-year-old Santos expressed regret and apologized to his constituents. "I deeply regret my conduct and the harm it has caused and accept full responsibility for my actions," he stated in court, his voice shaking as he read from a prepared statement.
Santos is scheduled to be sentenced on February 7, where he could face up to 22 years in prison. He waived his right to appeal any sentence shorter than 95 months—approximately eight years—as part of a plea deal with federal prosecutors. Santos was initially charged in May 2023 for laundering campaign funds, unauthorized use of donors' credit cards, and illicitly receiving unemployment benefits. He had been free on a $500,000 bond since his arrest.
