NMW Commission Seeks Public Input on 2025 Wage Adjustments

The Commission is conducting a thorough investigation into possible changes to the NMW and will present its recommendations to Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, later this year.

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) Commission has called on all stakeholders and interested parties to submit their views and comments on potential adjustments to the National Minimum Wage. The Commission is conducting a thorough investigation into possible changes to the NMW and will present its recommendations to Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, later this year.

Stakeholders have until 30 September 2024 to submit their written comments or representations on the matter. This call for input is in line with section 6(2) of the National Minimum Wage Act, No. 9 of 2018, which mandates regular reviews of the NMW to ensure it remains fair and reflective of economic conditions.

Understanding the National Minimum Wage

The NMW sets the minimum pay rate that employers are legally required to provide their employees for the work they perform. This baseline wage excludes any allowances, such as those for transport, tools, food, or accommodation, as well as payments in kind, tips, bonuses, and gifts.

The NMW acts as a floor level, ensuring that no employee is paid below a certain amount for their work. Initially implemented in 2019 at R20 per hour, the NMW has since been subject to periodic reviews and adjustments. Violations of the NMW are subject to fines as the wage is enforced by law.

Current NMW Rate and Review Process

As of February 2024, the NMW stands at R27.58 per hour, following an announcement by the former Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi. The upcoming review aims to assess whether further adjustments are necessary for the year 2025.

Professor Imraan Valodia, Chairperson of the NMW Commission, emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in this process. "Written representations will be forwarded to the Minister together with the Commission's report to decide on the 2025 determination," he stated.
