A French judge placed Telegram CEO Pavel Durov under formal investigation on Wednesday amid allegations of organized crime activities on the messaging app. Despite the charges, Durov was granted bail on the condition he pays 5 million euros, reports to police twice weekly, and remains within French borders.

Prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that there are grounds for the investigation, which encompasses suspected complicity in illicit transactions, child sex abuse imagery, drug trafficking, and other crimes. Arrested at a Paris airport on Saturday, Durov's detention fuels debate over the balance between free speech and law enforcement. Telegram's response has been minimal, maintaining compliance with EU laws.

The situation has escalated diplomatic tensions, with Russia expressing readiness to assist Durov, despite his complex citizenship status. Telegram, a critical communication tool in the Ukraine conflict, faces scrutiny over its role in various criminal activities. President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Durov's arrest is not politically motivated, reaffirming France's support for lawful free speech.
