Former Bangladesh Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and ex-Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi have been arrested in connection with the killing of a goldsmith during the recent quota reform protests that culminated in the downfall of Sheikh Hasina's government, according to media reports on Thursday.
Munshi, aged 74, was apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion in the upscale Gulshan area of Dhaka on Wednesday night. The murder case, filed in Rangpur, lists 17 individuals, including Chaudhury and Munshi, as suspects in the killing of 38-year-old goldsmith Muslim Uddin Milon.
Milon was killed during a clash between students and Awami League activists on July 19. The student-led protests against a controversial quota system in government jobs turned into a mass uprising, eventually toppling Hasina's Awami League government on August 5. Over 600 people have lost their lives in the violence that followed.
