Philippines Sets Sights on Military Modernization with $33 Billion Defense Plan
The Philippines intends to upgrade its military with mid-range missiles and advanced fighter jets, committing at least $33 billion. The move, aimed at boosting defense amid regional tensions, was discussed by Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro and military chief Romeo Brawner. The country considers offers and financing options while preparing for extensive joint exercises with the U.S.
The Philippines is planning a significant upgrade to its military capabilities, aiming to acquire mid-range missiles and advanced fighter jets at a cost of at least $33 billion, according to senior security officials. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize its defense in response to escalating regional tensions.
Armed forces chief Romeo Brawner emphasized the need for cutting-edge weaponry during a media conference with U.S. Indo-Pacific Commander Samuel Paparo. This development aligns with the growing security cooperation between the Philippines and the United States, marked by the largest joint military exercises planned for next year.
In April, the U.S. deployed an intermediate-range missile system in northern Philippines during military drills, a move that drew sharp criticism from China. Amid increasing run-ins with China in the South China Sea, the Philippines is expediting its defense upgrades, including a potential purchase of 40 advanced jet fighters.
