The Assam assembly will eliminate the two-hour break on Fridays that allowed Muslim legislators to offer 'namaz,' announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The rule will take effect from the next session, said an assembly official. Sarma stated on X, 'By doing away with the 2 hour Jumma break, @AssamAssembly has prioritized productivity and shed another vestige of colonial baggage. This practice was introduced by Muslim League's Syed Saadulla in 1937.' He added, 'My gratitude to Hon'ble Speaker Shri @BiswajitDaimar5 dangoriya and our legislators for this historical decision.'
For the last time, the two-hour break was provided on Friday, the final day of the Autumn session, the official revealed. An official statement, distributed in the House and made available to reporters, indicated that the Rules Committee had unanimously agreed to drop this practice and adopt a motion to amend the rule for regular proceedings on Fridays.
