The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Textiles, is organizing an event titled "CHHAAP-NIFT@Dilli Haat" from September 2nd to 15th, 2024, at Dilli Haat INA, New Delhi. The event, named Chhaap, symbolizes the indelible mark of India’s rich handloom and craft traditions. It showcases the NIFT Craft Cluster Initiative, which highlights the creative synergy between NIFT students, alumni, and artisans, underscoring the institute’s commitment to promoting fashion and Indian craftsmanship.

This event marks a significant milestone in NIFT’s mission to integrate academic excellence with craft-based application. The collaboration provides a platform for NIFT students and alumni to display their talent and creative vision to a diverse audience.

Over 160 stalls featuring artisans, handloom weavers, and collaborative displays of designers and artisans are set up at Dilli Haat. These participants hail from across the country and have been integral to the NIFT Craft Cluster Initiative, where they have mentored NIFT students, imparting traditional skills and adapting to changing market trends. Their role as mentors has been crucial in co-creating with NIFT students, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation.

NIFT, in collaboration with the Offices of Development Commissioners for Handloom and Handicrafts under the Ministry of Textiles, runs a Craft Cluster Initiative. Under this program, students engage in Craft Research and Documentation, Craft-Based Design Projects, and co-creation with artisans. The results of these projects will be showcased at the NIFT pavilion during the event.

A key highlight of the event is the Fashion Showcase – Samanvay, which will present a curated collection of designs co-created by NIFT’s talented alumni. This showcase will feature ensembles that blend modern aesthetics with traditional techniques, reflecting NIFT’s dedication to innovation while honoring India’s cultural heritage.

The event will also feature Interactive Workshops on Sustainable Practices – Srijan, offering hands-on sessions and expert-led discussions on sustainable practices. These workshops are designed to provide valuable insights and skills for aspiring designers and craft enthusiasts.

In addition, Craft Demonstrations – Sampada will highlight the exquisite skills of India’s master artisans as they demonstrate traditional craft techniques. These demonstrations aim to foster a deeper appreciation for the role of traditional craftsmanship in contemporary fashion.

Another innovative aspect of the event is Kalamanthan, a workshop conceptualized and curated by Dr. Dimple Bahl. This exhibit presents a dynamic partnership between artisans, students, and the Department of Fashion Communication at NIFT’s Delhi Campus. Each piece in the exhibit represents a thoughtful blend of artistic vision and skill, exploring new creative frontiers while honoring traditional craftsmanship.

Musical Performances – Tarang by a lineup of indie bands will add a vibrant musical dimension to the event. These performances, ranging from folk and acoustic to electronic and alternative genres, will enhance the overall experience for visitors.

NIFT’s marquee display at Dilli Haat underscores the institute’s dedication to promoting its well-nuanced academic strategy. By participating in this iconic marketplace, NIFT aims to engage with the community, celebrate the rich tapestry of Indian crafts, and inspire future generations of designers.
