Malaysia Probes Diplomatic Note Leak Amidst South China Sea Tensions
Malaysia’s foreign ministry is investigating a leak of a classified note from China, expressing concern over Malaysia's oil and gas activities in the South China Sea. The note was published by Philippine outlet The Inquirer. The ministry emphasized Malaysia’s intent to defend its sovereignty while seeking peaceful resolutions.
Malaysia's foreign ministry announced on Wednesday it will file a police report and launch an internal investigation into the leak of a classified diplomatic note from China's foreign ministry, sent to the Malaysian embassy in Beijing in February.
Published by Philippine media outlet The Inquirer on Aug. 29, the note reportedly asserted that Malaysia's oil and gas exploration in the South China Sea infringed on China's sovereignty. The Malaysian ministry did not elaborate on the note's contents.
Reuters could not confirm the document's authenticity. China's extensive territorial claims in the South China Sea complicate energy exploration for multiple nations. Malaysia, under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, has maintained a dovish policy toward Beijing, prioritizing peaceful dispute resolution.
In a statement, Malaysia reiterated its commitment to defending its sovereignty while handling disputes through peaceful dialogue. Both Malaysia and China have expressed a determination to resolve issues without resorting to conflict.
