A 14-year-old boy arrested following the fatal assault on 80-year-old Bhim Kohli while he was out walking his dog in a park near Leicester appeared in court on Thursday charged with his murder.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons as he is a minor, appeared at Leicester Youth Court. He was among five children initially arrested by Leicestershire Police, with the other four released with no further action. Kohli’s family released a statement expressing their heartbreak over the loss.
'Bhim was a deeply loving husband, father, and grandfather,' their statement reads. 'Even at 80, he was active and enjoyed tending his allotment and walking the family dog.'
A post-mortem confirmed Kohli died from a neck injury sustained in the attack. Detective Inspector Emma Matts of Leicestershire Police described the case as 'extremely tragic,' and assured ongoing support to the family. Further information will be restricted as the case progresses to trial.
