Escalating Tensions in Manipur: Fresh Violence Claims Five Lives

In Manipur’s Jiribam district, five people were killed amid ethnic violence on Saturday. Conflict erupted after militants shot dead a man in his sleep, leading to a clash between armed groups. The district has seen sporadic violence despite attempts by local communities to reach peaceful agreements.

In a tragic turn of events, five individuals lost their lives in fresh violence that erupted in Manipur's Jiribam district on Saturday morning. According to police sources, one person was shot dead while asleep, followed by a fatal exchange of gunfire between members of opposing communities.

The initial incident saw militants infiltrate an isolated house about five kilometers from the district headquarters, killing the lone occupant in his sleep. This act of violence triggered a severe clash between armed groups from the warring communities, resulting in the deaths of four more individuals, including three militants from hill-based groups.

This outbreak of violence comes despite a previous agreement reached on August 1 between representatives of the Meitei and Hmar communities to restore peace. The district has been a hotspot of conflict, with over 200 people killed and thousands displaced since ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups flared up last year.
