The body of a 65-year-old woman who had been missing for nearly a month was discovered inside an open pipe of a non-functional tubewell, police reported on Sunday.

The woman's husband, Hari Shankar Maurya, stated that his wife, Shyama Devi, left their home in Baira Khas village on August 14 and did not return. A missing report was filed on August 18, according to Gyanpur SHO Arun Dubey. On Saturday, villagers alerted police after detecting a foul smell emanating from a room of the inactive government tubewell department.

Villagers used a rope to probe the pipe, revealing a hand when inspected further with a flashlight, Dubey added. The police retrieved the woman's body with assistance from fire brigade personnel. It was noted that Shyama Devi suffered from mental challenges and was under treatment. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and an investigation is underway to determine what happened. The woman had five children.
