Sanitation workers contracted by the Regional Mental Hospital in Maharashtra's Thane city have called off their nearly month-long chain hunger strike. This follows the administration's agreement to pay them salaries as per the mandated minimum wage standards.
The strike was officially called off on Monday, according to the Shramik Janata Sangh (SJS), the organization that spearheaded the agitation. The decision to end the protest came after workers' salaries were successfully deposited as per the mandated minimum wage standards, SJS confirmed in a release.
The protest, which began on August 13, involved four cleaners taking turns to observe a 24-hour hunger strike. The workers initiated the strike after the hospital administration and the contractor did not comply with a Thane industrial court's order dated June 11 to pay salaries as per the minimum wages, SJS said.
