The Income Tax Department is on the verge of seizing a Rs 12-crore asset of the late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari. This development follows the adjudicating authority under the anti-benami assets law confirming the property's attachment as of 2023, sources revealed on Wednesday.
The said property, located in 'Mauja Kapurpur NZA under Sadar Tehsil' in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur district, has been declared a benami asset. Initially, the I-T Department’s investigation wing in Lucknow issued a provisional attachment order under the Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016 in April 2013. That order led to the property's impoundment in May.
Identified as Ansari’s alleged associate and neighbor, Ganesh Dutt Mishra, the property's benamidar, was named in the order, confirming Ansari as the beneficial owner. The tax department will now proceed to confiscate the asset. Ansari, who passed away from cardiac arrest earlier this year, had over 60 criminal cases against him and was a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar.
