Orissa High Court Shocked by Alleged Police Assault on Army Officer and Fiancee

The Orissa High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the alleged assault of an army officer and his fiancée at a Bhubaneswar police station last week. Expressing shock and concern, the court has prohibited both mainstream and social media from disclosing the identities of the victims.
A Division Bench, led by Chief Justice Chakradhari Saran Singh, acknowledged the steps taken by the state government but criticized the administration for failing to install CCTV cameras in all 650 police stations in the state. The court has directed a senior police officer to submit a report by October 8.
Describing the incident as "very disturbing", the high court has also demanded that the state government provide details on future measures to protect the dignity and identity of complainants at police stations. Advocate General Pitambar Acharya informed the court that a Judicial Commission of Enquiry has been appointed, and swift action has been taken against the involved officers and suspects.
