Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis confirmed on Monday that police shot dead Akshay Shinde, the accused in the Badlapur school sexual assault case, in self-defense.

Akshay Shinde, accused of abusing two minors at a school where he worked as an attendant, was en route to Badlapur from Taloja jail for investigation when he grabbed a policeman's gun and fired at an assistant inspector. The retaliatory fire from an accompanying police officer led to his death.

The incident has sparked condemnation from opposition parties, who questioned the sequence of events and raised concerns about potential evidence destruction. They have called for a judicial probe, doubting the police's claims of self-defense. Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole and Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare criticized the handling of the case, demanding transparency and accountability from state authorities.
