Russia Claims Capture of Two Villages in Ukraine Amidst Ongoing Vuhledar Battle
Russia announced the capture of two more villages in Ukraine and ongoing attacks in Vuhledar. The villages' capture remains unverified. Fighting is reported inside Vuhledar, but local Ukrainian officials deny it has been captured, stating that reconnaissance operations are ongoing. Analysts suggest that capturing Vuhledar won't significantly impact Moscow's advancements.
Russia announced on Wednesday that it had captured two more villages in Ukraine and was conducting attacks in the town of Vuhledar, a historical Ukrainian stronghold.
The Russian Defence Ministry reported that its forces had taken control of Hostre and Hryhorivka, although Reuters was unable to independently verify this claim. According to state news agency RIA, Denis Pushilin, the Russian-appointed head of Donetsk region, confirmed that combat was occurring within Vuhledar, which had a pre-war population of 14,000.
Vadym Filashkin, the Ukrainian governor of the region, countered the claims, stating that Russian forces had not reached Vuhledar's outskirts, though reconnaissance groups were present. 'Our defenders are striving to repel them. The town has not been captured,' he stated during a televised address.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on reports suggesting that Russian forces had encircled Vuhledar, a fortified mining town critical to Ukrainian defenses since the 2022 war outset, by stating, 'The dynamic is positive.' Despite a Ukrainian incursion into Russia's Kursk region aimed at drawing Russian troops away, Russian forces in eastern Ukraine achieved their fastest advance in two years this August.
Analysts from the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War noted that while Russia seems to be intensifying its efforts in Vuhledar, capturing the town is unlikely to considerably alter Moscow's future military prospects, given its existing control over most access routes.
