The Supreme Court on Monday scrutinized the assertion made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu that animal fat was used in the preparation of Tirupati laddus, demanding evidence to support the claim.

Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan pointed out the timing of the claim, noting that it was made on September 18, prior to the FIR filed on September 25 and the subsequent formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on September 26. The bench criticized the CM's public statement, stressing that influential figures should avoid making comments that could stir public sentiments.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was asked to assist in deciding whether the state-appointed SIT should continue with the investigation or if an independent agency should take over. The court is set to further deliberate on the matter on October 3.
