The Union Home Ministry has given its approval for the renaming of Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra to Ahilyanagar, according to state revenue minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil on Friday.
This decision, taken by the state cabinet in March, has been pending approval from the Centre. The district's new name honors Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th-century ruler from Indore, who was originally from this region.
Previously, the government under Eknath Shinde had similarly renamed Aurangabad and Osmanabad to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Dharashiv, respectively.
