Israel's UNRWA Ban: Looming Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Israel's decision to ban UNRWA threatens the humanitarian situation in Gaza, a U.N. report warns. The agency, crucial for Gaza's population, might face operational collapse due to the ban, risking further child fatalities. Israeli authorities cite links between UNRWA staff and Hamas attacks as the reason for the prohibition.
Israel’s ban on UNRWA could significantly impact humanitarian efforts in Gaza, leading to further child deaths, U.N. agencies warned Tuesday. The prohibition on the U.N. refugee agency, passed by Israel, raises serious concerns over the delivery of essential relief services in Gaza, operational there for over a year.
UNICEF spokesperson James Elder stated the ban risks a collapse of Gaza’s humanitarian system, indirectly threatening the lives of children. More than 13,300 children have reportedly died in the conflict, exacerbated by worsening medical and food shortages, Palestinian health officials noted.
Echoing these concerns, the World Health Organization highlighted the agency's indispensable role in public health, including a significant impact on polio vaccination efforts. U.N. spokesperson Jens Laerke described the ban as potential collective punishment, a term denoting retaliation against a group for actions by individuals.
