In a move to bolster military relations, South Africa welcomed Russia's Aerospace Forces for a goodwill visit on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at the Air Force Base Waterkloof in Pretoria. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) announced that this visit underscores the two nations' commitment to deepening defence cooperation and strengthening ties between their respective air forces.
The Russian military delegation, which will remain in South Africa until November 1, brings significant air assets, including the IL-62, AN-124, and Tupolev Tu-160 'Blackjack' bombers—the first of their kind to land on the African continent. This visit enables the South African Air Force (SAAF) to gain exposure to advanced Russian military technology, enhancing its technical understanding and strategic capabilities.
Alongside the aerial display, the visit will include bilateral seminars focused on combat planning, search and rescue operations, and strategic defence philosophies. This engagement will allow technical staff from both nations to exchange insights, strengthening operational understanding and coordination.
According to SANDF, the cooperation traces back to a 1995 defence agreement between the Ministries of Defence, solidifying joint visits and military cooperation. This occasion also highlights SANDF's commitment to an international defence partnership framework, with ties to various global forces aimed at enriching its defence knowledge and operational readiness.
