Human rights lawyers have filed an urgent appeal in Berlin’s Administrative Court aimed at halting the MV Kathrin, a German cargo ship, from delivering a 150-tonne shipment of military-grade explosives to Israel. The appeal, backed by the European Legal Support Center (ELSC), represents three Palestinians from Gaza.
The ELSC contends that the explosives, mainly RDX, could be used in munitions for Israeli military operations in Gaza, potentially facilitating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. In August, Namibian authorities, supported by Amnesty International, blocked the ship, which set out from Vietnam, from docking at its primary harbor.
The MV Kathrin, owned by Germany's Lubeca-Marine, had been turned away from several African and Mediterranean ports before Portuguese authorities allowed it to proceed under a German flag. The case names Lubeca-Marine and Germany's economy ministry, though neither were available for immediate comment.
