Tourists Detained for Unauthorized Access at Baikonur Cosmodrome

Russian state media reported the arrest of two European tourists at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan for unauthorized entry. The French and German nationals reportedly wanted to view a Russian Energiya rocket at the site, which is frequently used for space launches by Russia.

The 21-year-old Frenchman and 26-year-old German were detained for one day and subsequently removed from the complex. They had embarked on what was described as an "unauthorized walk" within the restricted area. This incident follows a similar situation in July when two Dutch citizens and a Belgian were arrested attempting to enter Baikonur.

While the cosmodrome is located in a remote desert and has restricted access, it offers tours for those interested in witnessing spacecraft launches. Despite such options, illicit attempts to enter the site persist, recently resulting in dehydration-related fatalities.
