The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and South African Police Service (SAPS) are intensifying operations on the N1 freeway following a rise in spiking incidents that have jeopardized motorists’ safety.

In a strongly worded statement, the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Public Safety condemned the criminal behavior that has led to numerous accidents.

Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, expressed outrage over deliberate acts such as placing rocks on the road between critical sections of the N1:

  • N1 North: Between Soweto Highway and Maraisburg Off-ramps.
  • N1 South: Between Maraisburg and Rand Show Road Off-ramps.

“These reckless acts threaten the lives of innocent motorists. This is an attack on the safety and dignity of our residents,” Tshwaku emphasized.

Joint Operations Underway

The JMPD and SAPS have launched joint operations to curb the surge in spiking incidents and ensure the safety of road users. Increased patrols and surveillance have been deployed across highways and freeways, prioritizing the protection of citizens and visitors during the festive season.

Allegations of Negligence Under Investigation

The Department of Public Safety addressed troubling allegations that JMPD officers failed to assist a motorist who narrowly escaped a mugging after their tyres were spiked.

The Department has launched a full investigation through its Internal Affairs Unit, vowing accountability for any officer found guilty of misconduct or dereliction of duty.

“The department will not tolerate negligence by those entrusted to serve and protect,” the statement affirmed.

Public Engagement and Reporting

Citizens are encouraged to contribute to road safety by reporting suspicious activities and emergencies. The public can contact emergency hotlines at 082 060 0057 or 011 375 5911.

Proactive Measures and Commitment

The City has taken steps to address the alarming rise in road spike incidents decisively, ensuring the safety of all motorists. In its concluding statement, the Department of Public Safety reaffirmed its commitment to justice and accountability, stating:

“Johannesburg remains steadfast in ensuring the safety and security of all residents. We will continue to lead with decisive action, making Johannesburg a city where justice prevails.”

Heightened Festive Season Safety Focus

With the festive season witnessing increased travel, authorities are focused on ensuring the safety of highways and freeways. This includes visible policing, rapid response mechanisms, and enhanced coordination between the JMPD and SAPS.

Motorists are advised to remain vigilant, avoid stopping in isolated areas, and report hazards promptly. Authorities assure residents of their commitment to restoring safety and confidence on Johannesburg’s roads.
