The Kremlin declared on Wednesday that it will never discuss exchanging the Ukrainian territories under its control for parts of Russia's Kursk region currently held by Ukrainian forces. This announcement dismisses any possibility of a territory swap proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to facilitate the cessation of ongoing hostilities.
In an interview with the Guardian, Zelenskiy suggested offering portions of the Kursk region as part of the swap deal, in a bid to negotiate peace. The conflict has seen Ukraine capturing pockets of Kursk during a swift incursion last August.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has reiterated the Russian stance, vowing that the Russian military would expel Ukrainian forces from Kursk. At present, Russia holds just under 20% of Ukrainian land, equating to over 112,000 square kilometers. Meanwhile, Ukrainian control extends to approximately 450 square kilometers of the Kursk region, according to publicly available battlefield maps.
