Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar has been convicted in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, specifically for the murders of two individuals in Delhi's Saraswati Vihar. This verdict, reached on February 12, 2025, follows a lengthy legal process beginning with an FIR in 1991 and multiple judicial proceedings over the years.
Despite initial setbacks, such as a lack of sufficient evidence indicated by a Delhi court in 1994, persistent investigations by the government-appointed SIT led to Kumar's arrest in 2021. Subsequently, charges were framed in December 2021, leading up to the recent conviction.
The 1984 riots, as detailed by the Nanavati Commission, resulted in 2,733 deaths and 587 FIRs in Delhi, with a mere 28 cases resulting in convictions. Kumar, also accused in other riot-related cases, faces life imprisonment, with an appeal pending in the Supreme Court.
