An agreement between Russia and Sudan for a Russian naval base on the Red Sea has been confirmed by Sudan's Foreign Minister Ali Yusef Sharif during a Moscow press conference.

Although the plan has been in discussions for years, a new accord follows Sudan's 2019 leadership change. Russia has maintained connections with conflicting sides of Sudan's ongoing civil disputes, with significant Russian presence observed at Port Sudan.

Previously, a Sudanese general highlighted Russia's request for a Red Sea fuelling station in exchange for arms. The region's geopolitical importance, bolstered by Sudan's extensive coastline and gold resources, has attracted diverse international interests.
