Samajwadi Party's Kairana MP, Iqra Choudhary, is challenging the Supreme Court to ensure the stringent enforcement of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991. The Act mandates that the religious character of a site remains as it was on August 15, 1947.

The hearing was led by a bench including Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, featuring senior advocate Kapil Sibal. The plea aims to address rising legal challenges concerning mosques and dargahs, which threaten India's secular values. A similar plea by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is also being considered.

The case is further complicated by petitions from various Hindu organizations challenging the Act's validity. The Supreme Court's recent orders preserve religious status quo, drawing scrutiny over Sections 2, 3, and 4 that some argue limit judicial remedies for reclaiming religious places.
