The Supreme Court has pulled back its directive to expedite the police investigation against MLA Abbas Ansari under the Gangsters Act, instead demanding clarity on whether any part of the investigation is still pending.
A court bench, including Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, rescheduled the hearing to March 6. This decision came after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Ansari, asserted that the investigation was complete and a chargesheet had been submitted. The UP government, represented by Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, indicated a need for further clarification.
Initially, the court instructed UP Police to conclude the probe within ten days, considering Ansari's bail plea post-investigation. Ansari, fearing an encounter, previously requested a virtual trial presence. A case under the Gangsters Act was registered against him and others for extortion and assault, leading to his arrest in September 2024.
