India and Bangladesh have taken a significant step in enhancing their border security measures by deciding to establish a new communication link between the deputy commanders of their border-guarding forces. Additionally, they have identified 99 new patches for the construction of a border fence, a move aimed at fortifying their shared boundaries.
These decisions were reached during the biannual director general-level talks between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), held from February 18 to February 20. This was the first high-level meeting since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh last August, according to sources in the security establishment.
The talks proceeded in a 'cordial manner,' with the Indian delegation successfully convincing their Bangladeshi counterparts about the importance of fencing the remaining unfenced areas along the 4,096-km frontier. Moreover, the two sides have decided to establish a new 'hotline' for effective communication between senior officers to enable real-time information exchange and better manage cross-border crime incidents.
