Investigations Intensify: Sabotage Suspected in Baltic Sea Telecom Cable Incident

Swedish and Finnish authorities are probing potential sabotage of an undersea telecoms cable in the Baltic Sea. Recent months have seen multiple seabed cables damaged, raising suspicion after several infrastructure outages since 2022. The European Commission plans enhanced surveillance and readiness in response to the incidents.

Investigations Intensify: Sabotage Suspected in Baltic Sea Telecom Cable Incident

Swedish and Finnish police are delving into a possible case of sabotage involving an undersea telecoms cable in the Baltic Sea. In response to multiple cable damages in recent months, Sweden's coast guard has dispatched a vessel to the scene.

Since the onset of intensified regional tensions, notably after Russia's 2022 Ukraine invasion, the Baltic Sea has witnessed numerous disruptions in power, telecom, and gas infrastructure. The NATO alliance has amplified its presence in reaction to these incidents, reportedly caused by civilian ships. Finnish operator Cinia reported problems with its C-Lion1 fibre-optic link to Germany, which was confirmed damaged while still maintaining data flow.

The European Commission aims to bolster undersea cable surveillance, introducing a Baltic Sea hub to preempt such incidents. This comes amid escalating concerns about repeated disruptions, including Cinia's C-Lion1 cable undergoing multiple breaches last year. Meanwhile, Swedish and Finnish authorities continue investigating the damage, yet no prosecutions have been made.
