A New York judge has paused the corruption trial of Mayor Eric Adams indefinitely, declining to dismiss the charges straight away. Judge Dale Ho announced he will appoint attorney Paul Clement to contest prosecutors' requests for dismissal. The Justice Department earlier advocated for dropping charges against Adams.

Tensions rose as Justice Department officials, following orders from Trump-era appointee Emil Bove, pushed for dismissal, sparking resignations among Manhattan prosecutors. Adams, accused of bribery and campaign finance violations, has pleaded not guilty, claiming the case was retaliation from Biden's administration for his criticism of their immigration policies.

The political fallout intensifies as Adams reportedly gravitated towards Trump, allegedly proposing aid in implementing Trump's immigration agenda in exchange for dropping the charges. State officials, including Governor Kathy Hochul, have distanced themselves from Adams, although she has refrained from exercising her power to remove him from office.
