Crackdown on Illicit Poppy Farming in Jharkhand

In a sweeping crackdown on illegal agriculture, Jharkhand authorities have obliterated poppy cultivation over 19,000 acres and apprehended 190 individuals involved in the trade. The unprecedented operation has marked a significant increase in legal actions compared to previous years, officials reported on Saturday.

Embarking on a mission to curb illicit farming practices, the state has registered 283 cases since the operation began in January. Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari, emphasizing the campaign's momentum, called for the complete eradication of poppy crops by March 15 and stressed the need for further arrests to accelerate justice.

Districts such as Chatra, Khunti, and Ranchi have been identified as primary affected zones, with Khunti bearing the brunt of the destructive process, eliminating poppy crops over 10,520 acres. Authorities are committed to continuing this operation to ensure long-term compliance and dismantle the poppy supply chain.
