Cross-Border Tensions Flare Up: Maharashtra Halts Bus Services to Karnataka

Upon an attack on a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus in Karnataka by pro-Kannada activists, Maharashtra halted bus services to the state. Tensions are escalating due to a linked assault on a Karnataka bus conductor not conversant in Marathi. Multiple arrests have followed in this ongoing investigation.

The Maharashtra government has taken strong steps following an attack on one of its state transport buses in Karnataka, ordering the suspension of bus services to the neighboring state. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced this decision after pro-Kannada activists allegedly attacked an MSRTC bus traveling from Bengaluru to Mumbai in Chitradurga, Karnataka. The activists reportedly blackened the face of driver Bhaskar Jadhav and assaulted him.

A related incident reported on the same day involved the assault of a Karnataka state transport conductor on the outskirts of Belagavi, allegedly triggered by a language misunderstanding with a Marathi-speaking girl. A case was registered, leading to the arrest of four individuals in connection with the attack on the conductor. The conductor, identified as Mahadevappa Mallappa Hukkeri, also faces charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, following complaints from the girl involved.

Amid these incidents, pro-Kannada activists have staged roadblocks and protests, inflaming existing regional tensions further. Both governments are addressing law and order to prevent further escalation. The Belagavi Police have set up investigative teams to resolve the matter, while district governments are in dialogue to maintain peace.
