Global Call for Peace: Ending the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged nations to work towards halting the Russia-Ukraine war, advocating for a just and lasting peace. His call comes on the conflict's third anniversary as the United States and Ukraine prepare competing UN resolutions aimed at ending the hostilities.
In a significant address, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on world leaders to bring an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Speaking at the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, Guterres emphasized the urgent need for a just and lasting peace, aligned with the principles of the UN Charter, international law, and General Assembly resolutions.
The address preceded a crucial UN session in New York, where the United States is set to present a resolution focused on ending the war, competing against a similar motion backed by Ukraine and European allies. This motion urges Russia to withdraw its troops and cease hostilities immediately.
Guterres highlighted broader human rights concerns, speaking of unbearable human rights abuses globally, including in Gaza and the Democratic Republic of Congo. His remarks underline the interconnected nature of global peace and human rights efforts.
