Escalating Violence in West Bank Threatens Healthcare
The World Health Organization (WHO) expresses deep concern over the escalating violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, highlighting the negative impact on healthcare services. Rising attacks have affected healthcare facilities and workers, with severe movement restrictions compounding the situation and causing civilian displacement.
The World Health Organization has raised alarms about the increasing violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, noting its detrimental effects on healthcare facilities. In an unprecedented move, Israel deployed tanks to the region for the first time in over two decades and ordered military forces to prepare for a prolonged operation against Palestinian militants.
WHO's representative in the Palestinian territories, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, conveyed serious concerns via a video link from Gaza. 'The current surge in violence and attacks on healthcare in the West Bank is deeply troubling,' he stated, stressing the severity of the situation.
This year, 44 attacks have disrupted healthcare services, with four facilities directly affected. Between October 2023 and February 2024, 25 healthcare workers and patients were killed, and 121 injured. Movement restrictions have further impeded ambulance access and healthcare delivery. The ongoing conflict has displaced at least 40,000 Palestinians from the region.
